9th Annual MLK March

On Friday, January 13th, Kalles honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr with their 9th annual Martin Luther King march to Pioneer Park.  Kalles is the only junior high in the district, the only junior high in the region, to honor King in such a way, remembering the series of peaceful marches which were instrumental in propelling the Civil Rights Movement forward.

Students gathered in the gym where they heard some of the historical background for the March along with excerpts from King's speeches and writings, read by Hana Pham, Tanner Pierce, Charlie Schoos, Zane Lee, Syndey Lewis, Josh Auvaa, Madi Mestas, Mitchell Klein, Becca Maher, Elsa Bley, Jacob Yoon, and Hailey Frazier Smith.

The entire student body, along with staff and faculty, then marched from Kalles to Pioneer Park Pavilion, carrying signs made by the school's student diversity committee, SLERC, and distributing flowers to the police officers who kept their route safe.

At the park, students stood respectfully (in sub-freezing temperatures) as students Lauren Ormiston and Ethan Berg read a poem about King and an excerpt from his famous "Drum Major Instinct" sermon.  Students then heard a short speech from Mrs. Lee, Kalles' new assistant principal.  She shared some of her experiences growing up and the importance of "being kind anyway."  Finally, students Sara Sprague, Nina Fowler, Caitlyn Babcock, Savannah Names, and Phoebe Martin presented a mash-up of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" and the Black-Eyed Peas' "Where is the Love" before marching back to Kalles to resume the rest of their half day of school.

It was another great March and Kalles students once again demonstrated why it's so great to be a Tyee!
